When One Income Outpaces Two

The Insight

Between 2017 and 2022, a single, non-Black homebuyer in St. Louis had a higher median income than a Black couple.

  • Black single homebuyers: $53,525

  • Non-Black single homebuyers: $88,919

  • Black couples: $80,888

  • Non-Black couples: $152,424

A single non-Black buyer earned ~10% more than a Black couple during the same period.

Why It Matters

Homeownership is often framed as a household decision—but income gaps fundamentally shape who can compete, qualify, and close. This disparity helps explain persistent differences in access and outcomes, even before credit, debt, or pricing enter the picture.
